FIFO (first in, first out)

Also called: FIFO

FIFO is an inventory valuation method that assumes the oldest units are sold first, so closing stock is valued at the most recent purchase costs.

When purchase prices are rising, FIFO gives a lower cost of goods sold and higher profit than weighted average cost. It's permitted under IFRS, Indian and UK accounting standards, and US GAAP.

FIFO is also used loosely to describe selling older stock first on the shop floor.
